It is with huge sadness that the Kivuli family announce the loss of our wonderful founder, Paula Pape.

Without Paula, Kivuli may have never been born. It was Paula who observed one day back in the 90s, a little girl with Down’s syndrome wearing a school uniform in her local village and followed her one day to see where she was going. It was very unusual to see a disabled child in school uniform in those days. Margaret, the little girl arrived at a small building in Gilgil on the site of a large township school and Paula met the lady in the building and there were perhaps a dozen other children with special needs with her. Her name was Rhoda! Paula asked what she could do to help and Rhoda’s response was “to give your time and love”.

Paula started supplying this small special school with basic supplies that they needed; pencils and exercise book that were donated from Pembroke School, where she worked. The local community became involved and a few years later, Kivuli Trust was created.

Paula was actively involved until she died in April 2023. She did so much for these special children and worked tirelessly for many years alongside her job at Pembroke and indeed when she retired.

Paula also kindly hosted many volunteers for Kivuli at her beautiful house and regailed them with many a story by the fire. Volunteers were looked after and always sent to Kivuli with a delicious packed lunch.

She was the most generous, kind and selfless person and will be missed hugely.
