On Wednesday 29th March, twenty children and five members of staff enjoyed a fun day out at the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage (www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org) in Karen. The trip was organised by UK supporter, Liz Dillarstone and Deputy Head of Gilgil Special School, Rhoda Otieno and was generously funded by an anonymous UK sponsor/donor. The visit to the elephants was followed by a complimentary lunch at the Purdy Arms (www.purdyarms.com) thanks to the wonderful hospitality of it’s owner, Jules and later on in the afternoon the children each painted a cushion cover at Kamili Designs (www.kamilidesigns.com) with thanks to owner, Penny and her daughter-in-law Katie.
The group were joined on their day trip by Director of International Needs, Kenya – Jocelyn Muraya and a group (The Real Hope Community Youth Organisation) who work with children in the Kawangware slums in Nairobi.
Liz commented, “I have visited the elephant orphanage a few times now but this was by far the most exciting visit for me. Seeing the delight on the children’s faces as they saw (and in some cases touched) elephants for the very first time was simply magical. The day was made possible by some very generous donors and hosts and I would like to acknowledge and thank them all on behalf of the staff and children of Gilgil Special School/Kivuli Trust. We are very much hoping to repeat the day with another group of children in October.”
